Stocks Dive on FOMC Statement and Weak ADP report

Small cap stocks lead the entire market lower as the market didn’t respond well to the FOMC’s statement. At the beginning of the day the ADP employment report disappointed showing weak job growth for the month of April. ISM manufacturing did surprise to the upside, but contracted month over month. Economic data continues to be weak across the globe and we continue to see diminishing returns from QE. After the release of the FOMC statement the market found a bid. However, during the final hour sellers took over and pushed the market to the lows of the day. This market remains in no man’s land and on the verge of heading back to the lows of April. Dow Jones Transport index (TRAN) and the Russell 2000 (RUT) were beaten up badly. TRAN ended the day down 2.3% and closing below its 50 day moving average. The Russell 2000 dropped 2.5% and it too fell below its 50 day moving average. In April both indexes were able to find support despite closing below their respective 50 day average. Today’s move for both indexes certainly signals weakness and potential to head for April’s lows. Price action certainly is not telling a pretty story for both of these indexes. All eyes will point towards Friday’s job report after today’s FOMC announcement. An excellent point made by Bill Gross of PIMCO was not the amount of savings we should be worried about, but the cost of savings. ZIRP has completely eroded yield for savers and thus no incentive to spend. The incentives for investment are misplaced and until rates can rise and improve the cost of savings we’ll continue to see lackluster growth. Remember, the Federal Reserve a Central Planning body is trying to manage decentralized data. It is time to challenge ZIRP and QE. Given today’s move in TRAN and RUT certainly should give pause to bulls for the time being. Sell in May just might be turn out to be the thing to do? Stick with your rules and execute. Cut your losses and ride your winners

GOOG Soars past $800 Stocks Lift to New Highs on Light Trade

The market is able to shrug off a dip in homebuilder sentiment and move into new highs on the year. Small caps continue to lift despite ultra light volume in the IWM tracking ETF. Volume on the day was below Friday’s option inflated volume. NYSE composite came in second adding 73 basis points boosted by Oil and Gas sector followed by Utilities. High gas prices and higher payroll taxes appear, for now have yet to cause any impacts to consumer spending despite WMT internal memo leaked on Friday. Our uptrend remains and we are going to continue to stick to it until we see evidence to suggest we are going switch gears. Volatility continues to be compressed as this market continues to push to the upside. Fears of any shock in the market have subsided as we have yet to see any major hurdles arise. We have our exit strategy in place so we do not fear any move to the downside. However, it is interesting to see how much volatility has compressed since this market has pushed higher. There isn’t any fear out there. Whether that translates to further upside or not remains to be seen. We have our uptrend and are operating as such. Until we see distribution piling up and leading stocks breaking down then we’ll switch gears. Tomorrow we’ll get the FOMC meeting minutes. The central bank has its work cut out for it trying to navigate the QE waters. Ben Bernanke has committed to an accommodative monetary policy for the United States. The Fed has pumped trillions of dollars into the market and trying to exit this strategy will be extraordinary difficult. How do you remove an addict from its preferred drug without causing the maximum pain? Perhaps we should accept the pain as temporary? Very interesting to see how this all plays out. For us Trend Followers price action will dictate how we react. Distribution remains elusive and with the market continuing to make new highs without any institutional selling is not a recipe to sell. We’ll let the market come to us rather than predicting where it will go next. S&P 500 Ends Win Streak as VIX Rises; Some Leaders Stumble

Small losses on the S&P 500 and Dow ended their win streaks as AAPL boosts the NASDAQ to close in the green. Durable goods orders were boosted by BA orders coming in better than expected. Disappointing pending home sales were blamed on low supply, but nonetheless there weren’t as many pending home sales as expected. The VIX was able to hold its mid-point despite the market getting support at the lows. There were a few troubling signs with 3D printers facing heavy volume selling. Recent long signals haven’t been working as well suggesting we may be in for the market to take a rest. Our uptrend is still intact, but we do have a few warning signs of a possible pause in the market rally. DDD and SSYS faced big losses today as these stocks have moved quite a bit from the 11/16 low in the market. It doesn’t matter if these stocks are the way of the future, for now the heavy volume selling suggests these stocks have further to correct. Today’s action is why we have our exit rules with our stocks. Outside of these stocks we don’t see too many trouble signs other than a few new longs not working immediately. KORS another leading stock had trouble today, but LNKD had no issues breaking out. It is very possible we are rotating into new names and this market will resume closing at highs by week’s end. Stay disciplined. Tomorrow we’ll get the Case-Shiller index regarding the housing market. The index has shown much improvement since the utter disaster back in 2008 and 2009. However, it will be Wednesday when we get a reading on fourth quarter GDP growth as well as the FOMC rate decision. Federal Reserve days tend to be positive for stocks and Wednesday shouldn’t be any different. Of course we’ll allow our signals guide us via price, but the reaction to the comments by the Fed should be entertaining. We aren’t about to call a market top or even a correction, but given the extreme sentiment readings last week and a few leaders getting hit the probability of a correction is greater. Stick to your game plan and execute. Stocks Stage a Big Rally, but Hit Some Resistance

The S&P 500 and Russell 2000 found very little resistance at last week’s high as the NASDAQ backed away from its high of last week. Volume was strong, but the market could not find enough buyers to clinch a true follow-through day. We continue to operate without a follow-through day, but with the NASDAQ and the rest of the indexes above their respective 50 day moving averages we are back in buy mode. The move at the end of the day does bring a bit of caution and only did a few buyers at the end of the day save the rally. Tomorrow’s reaction to the FOMC rate announcement and Bernanke’s press conference will tell us a great deal about where this market is headed. We are in buy mode despite the sluggish end of day action and will look for this trend to continue. We simply cannot ignore the move in small caps today with the index lagging only the NASDAQ today. Breaking out of a small consolidation area the group pushed higher and continues to look quite solid. It is very hard to ignore the relatively strength displayed by the group and we are going with it. Focusing in on price action IWM looks poised to continue its move higher. Of course, we have an exit plan and if this move fails we’ll simply exit and move on. There is no need to guess what may or may not happen here, but for now small caps look poised to lead this market higher. AAPL continues to be the talk of the town, but it too found resistance at its highs. GOOG did manage to get above its 50 day moving average during the trading session. However, by the close the stock was unable to close above it. Bad news for the stock as it is doing a lot of work well below the mid-point of its most recent sell-off. On the bright side of things CRM was able to punch through and breakout on very strong volume. We’ll see once again if this breakout can hold. QIHU, SSYS, DDD continue to struggle after breaking out. Tomorrow brings on the Fed and the potential for a fiscal deal. It will be fun watching the market dance to the sound of Ben Bernanke’s voice.

AAPL leads the NASDAQ Higher as Volume Expands; Crude Sinks

Heading into the first debate of the 2012 Presidential Campaign was led by the NASDAQ despite a faltering Semi-Conductor sector. Small cap stocks struggled as well with the Russell 2000 closing down 20 basis points. Volume expanded on the day, but with back to back days of subpar volume on Monday and Tuesday it was inevitable volume was going to increase. This morning’s ADP Employment change report showed 162,000 jobs were add in the month of September coming in slightly above expectations. In addition to the ADP report, a better than expected ISM Non-Manufacturing reading showed the service sector expanding in September. Not terrible news from the economy, but focusing on the price action we saw the market notch a day of accumulation. We still have not broken out from our recent trading range, but price action continues to be favorable to bulls in this uptrend. It appears the market is waiting on the debate tonight and Friday’s job report. Friday’s jobs report will more than likely disappoint not because of we don’t like the current administration, but the past few reports have been disappointing. In any instance other than the unemployment rate falling below 7% the Federal Reserve stock market put will more than likely dampen any bearishness related to the report. Anything is possible in QE trading. Look at crude falling more than four points today. Commodities are perceived as a good investment with the Federal Reserve printing presses running at full tilt. So while conventional thinking is a fun cocktail party discussion only price matters in the market. Whatever the market will bring we are going to be prepared. Tomorrow at 2 pm we’ll get the minutes from the latest FOMC meeting where Ben Bernanke announced QE3. It will be interesting to see how the market reacts to what the FOMC discussed during the meeting. Tomorrow should be a fun day with the market reacting to the first debate as well as the FOMC meeting minutes. Who knows we may even get a Spain bailout rumor. There is always something the chew on when it comes down to this market. Actions however, are governed by the price movement of our stocks. Enjoy the debates, but remember to cut your losses and there are other candidates then just Obama and Romney.

INTC AAPL Weigh Down Stocks in Light Volume Session

Big cap technology stocks and financials struggle as the market gives back more than half of last Thursday’s breakout. The good news on the session was the fact volume was lower and institutions were not big sellers. INTC was an excuse for the broad market sell off as the company took down 3rd quarter estimates. AAPL stock hit an all time high before sellers ransacked the stock ahead of its September 12th new product launch. Sellers pushed hard at the end of the day as VIX rose more than 1.85 points. The fear index is still sub-20 mark, but the move at the end of day showed fear crept back into the market. While we didn’t hit a day of distribution this not exactly the type of consolidate we were looking for, but we remain in an uptrend. The lone bit of economic news the market received today was consumer credit. In the month of July consumers reduced credit by 3.28 billion dollars. Economists expected the figure to be at 9.6 billion. It is nice to see consumers reducing their credit and not further their issues with even more debt. Tuesday will be a bit more active, but nothing that will make headlines on the day. Besides, everyone’s attention will be on AAPL’s even on Wednesday and the FOMC rate decision on Thursday. Leading stocks did not fare too well today either. One notable leader TDC was hit hard on the news of INTC. Volume across many names were low, but the price action among them were not kind in the slightest and does create a heighten level of doubt in the market. One day does not make the market, but we cannot see this type of action continue. We’ll need to see the market gain some traction with volume support. It is one thing to be defensive it is another to act on fear. Stay focused on price and where your exits are. Many traders fear they may lose gains and take profits too early finding out later their stock is higher. Know your exits prior to entry and you will not need to worry about anything in between. We aren’t off to the best start to the week, but there is plenty of time for the market to turn around. Ignore the noise and cut your losses

Fed Chief Says No to QE and Stocks Respond by Closing Lower

Leading up to the Federal Reserve rate annoucement was the big story was the software glitch hit by Knight Capital. Gigantic volume struck the NYSE causing very erratic trading in nearly 150 stocks. Just when confidence in the stock market is grim we get another flash crash incident. At least the news story distracted the majority prior to the Fed Announcement. Disappointing the market the Federal Reserve failed to deliver a new quantitative easing program. NASDAQ and Small Cap stocks lead the market lower with the Russell 200 finishing down more than 2%. It certainly doesn’t help when Knight Capital is down more than 33%, but small cap weakness continues. Preliminary volume indicates the NASDAQ was able to avoid a distribution day despite the losses on the session. Not a great day for bulls as the market will be hyper-focused on the ECB tomorrow before the opening bell. While the markets closed up lower the VIX failed to rally to show fear amongst sellers. The VIX has not been signalling any fear in this market. Today was no different despite the market not getting another round of QE. The lack of fear in the system can mean many things, but one thing it tells us upside will be limited and any large gains are a ways away. In addition to VIX, bond yields lept and closed higher after the Fed announcement. Rising bond yields and falling stock prices aren’t usually a norm. Sure, rising bond yields are a negative for the government and its financing activities. For stocks, from a historical view rising bond yields have been a big positive for the markets. While today may be an anomaly, it will be something to pay attention to going forward. Now it is onto the ECB tomorrow and then the July jobs report on Friday. More fireworks are set to hit the market and we’ll be ready. Remember, rule number one of cutting your losses!

Its Quantitative Easing or Bust

It is quite clear the market is waiting for the world’s central banks to print more money. Futures were heading lower along with European markets when the ECB’s Draghi issued comments about saving the EURO at all costs. Translation: they will print EUROs. The stock market’s reaction to Draghi’s comments were positive as price gains were strong on above average volume. End of day action wasn’t ideal and the S&P 500 was the only index to look ideal. However, what a difference rumors of quantitative easing will do for the market. There isn’t something quite right with this market, but with the hint of further easing the market will continue to trade wide and loose. Earnings season has not been kind as we are on pace for a very disappointing earnings season. While we are very price driven we focus on growth stocks. Unfortunately, without growth in fundamentals our universe of stocks shrink and this is the current situation we are in. The lack of growth in the market on the fundamental level has us seeing a narrowing universe of stocks. Not to mention this earning season has destroyed a few of our leading growth names. We can always hope the miracle of quantitative easing will save our stocks and set off another rip roaring rally. The AAII survey continues to lean towards the bearish side of things. It is easy to see as why the folks answering the survey are bearish. Earnings season is not spectacular and economic news has NOT been good. June’s PMI were very negative and recent home sales both pending and new have been disappointing. Manufacturing data has not been signaling growth, but contraction. Outside of quantitative easing there isn’t much to be bullish on. The next FOMC meeting is next week and on Wednesday they will release their policy statement and rate decision. We’ll focus on price and follow our rules while the rest use discretion and opinions to navigate this market. Tomorrow’s GDP report will set off fireworks for the market. Sit back and enjoy the ride! Have a great weekend.

NASDAQ Captures its 50 Day as Volume Rises ahead of the FOMC

Another good day for the markets as leading stocks continued to see breakouts. Volume rose on the day, but remained below its 50 day volume average. The market was able to ignore poor housing starts while building permits picked up more than expected. European markets closed higher calming fears over economic collapse in the Eurozone. Small cap stocks lead the market today with the Russell 2000 rising 1.8%. The NASDAQ was able to close with gains of 1.19%, but last hour selling did knock the index off its perch. We are not about to argue with the market and the rise over the past few days has been on better volume and we’ll follow the market’s lead. Tomorrow’s FOMC rate decision along side Bernanke answering questions from reporters will certainly have the market on its toes. Certainly we would want to avoid any sort of major meltdown ruining the current uptrend in the market. While we haven’t gotten a strong confirmation day if this market can avoid heavy distribution the better chances we have of continuing the trend. It is anyone’s guess what the FOMC will do, but given the recent testimony from Bernanke QE3 is not a likely scenario despite the market begging for it. Bernanke needs a plan out of DC of getting our debt under control by running surpluses. Without a plan it is very difficult to introduce a third round of easing with risks of skyrocketing commodity prices. In the end, no one knows what the FOMC will decide on and it is prudent to follow price. Switching gears and focusing on price the NASDAQ was able to regain its 50 day moving average. This is a very good sign for the market. Of course we’ll need to see the NASDAQ hold onto this moving average, but for now we have a significant development. In addition, we have quite a few leading stocks breaking out. They will need to continue the positive action for it to be a positive for the market. If we get headfakes from these leaders it will be a signal to get defensive. Right now, we have a green light from the market. Tomorrow will be an interesting day and it will be fun watching the action. Cut those losses!

Stocks Fall Again As FOMC Meeting Minutes Fail to Inspire

Once again stocks were able to find footing in the middle part of the day, but fail to hold the highs. A few more FOMC members are open to more quantitative easing it wasn’t enough to help the market push back into the highs. Of course we still have the mess going on in Europe, but the market was looking for QE3 to hit the market. The Fed knows any further QE will result in very high commodity prices squeezing the poor even further. We cannot have this situation and given the situation in the Europe and here at home puts the United States Central Bank in a precarious situation. The market remains weak and while we may see a one or two day bounce the trend is still down. If one had to guess just by looking at a chart of the NASDAQ it is quite easy to see the 200 day moving average is a logical next step for the index. Yes, we are oversold and sentiment is getting quite negative we have yet to see any real panic set into the market. The VIX, a measure of fear has yet to signal real fear in this market. Perhaps a move above 30 would signal enough fear, but it has yet to eclipse the 30 level. Talk of another flash crash is always imminent given the even happened only two years ago. For now we have a market creeping lower and lower and even with FB coming public on Thursday there is very little that can save this market from the inevitable. The United States has been on a war path regarding spending. Wars, social security, medicare, prescription drug coverage, etc are a big drag on the government budget. Unfortunately, Washington DC will not tell the American public the truth. Spending needs to be lowered end of story. The Buffett tax is only estimated to bring in a few billion dollars a year extra! We have a 1.5T yearly hole at the moment that Obama feels quite comfortable with. This is nuts! The only fix is to overhaul the tax code into a one page simple code and reduce spending. However, the media and Obama administration do a great job distracting the public from the facts. If anything, the United States fiscal cliff is far more dangerous than a Greece leaving the EURO. As a reminder, this week is options expiry and Friday should be a fun day. Tomorrow will more than likely be a bit more entertaining with FB coming public. We are not planning on participating in the IPO nor trading it on the first day. We’ll sit back and wait for it to base much like EBAY and GOOG did after their debuts. We’ll be patient. Execute you trading plan and cut those losses short.
